Greetings from the Vancouver airport! I’m about to board a ridiculously long (14.5 hours! 🤯) flight to Brisbane, Australia, and then on to another 6-ish hour flight to Bali, Indonesia, for ICANN 87. If you will be at that ICANN meeting, please do drop me a message and let’s connect!
Two quick things… I’ve published a new podcast episode… and I’m trying a new system to see about creating a community interested in what we are seeing out on the horizon in terms of emerging tech.
Bringing Back The Podcast! (And looking for guests..)
As I mentioned in previous newsletters, I have been so missing working with audio! I just love the medium and I enjoy talking with people and bringing stories in audio form. And so I’ve started bringing back “The Dan York Report” with an interview with David Belson.
David is a friend who has been staring at data about the Internet and publishing stories and reports about what he sees in that data in terms of traffic patterns, disruptions, major events, and more. When he was at Cloudflare, he had me join him for a few “Cloudflare TV” episodes talking about Internet disruptions… so I was glad to turn the tables and interview him. In this episode, we talked about where he sees the future of Internet measurement, the challenges of measuring Internet disruptions – and what the potential impact may or may not be of agentic AI. You can learn more about David at dbelson.com , mastodon.social/@dbelson or on LinkedIn at www.linkedin.com/in/dbelson/ (He’s also currently looking for his next role…)
If you would be interested to be interviewed, send me a note about why we should talk! Drop an email back to me (or ping me on Mastodon or LinkedIn).
Building a Community Around Emerging Technologies
I’ve still been giving a LOT of thought about building communities and connecting with others of similar interests. I’ve been experimenting with Discourse, and so I invite you all to join:
I’ve already started posting some topics about different emerging technologies I personally find interesting, and I would love to have other people join in. I’d love to connect with others who are interested in climbing up in their own “crow’s nests” and looking out at the horizon!
If you’ve never worked with Discourse, it’s a system for hosting forums… think kind of like Reddit but for your own topic (and with a smaller group of people).
It’s got a number of nice features… and it has mobile apps for IOS and Android that make engaging very easy. The IOS mobile app also runs on recent Macs, so you can have it as a separate app on your Mac.
Anyone reading this is welcome to join. Your first step will be to submit a request for an account. I will approve account requests as soon as I can … but do note I’m about to go spend 15 hours in an airborne metal tube, so I may not be approving immediately after I send this out.
P.S. Note that this is Discourse, the community software that’s been around for many years, versus Discord, the live chat system used by many, particularly in the gaming space.

This IS also a WordPress hosted blog, so you can visit the main site and add a comment to this post, like we used to do back in glory days of blogging.
Or if you don’t want to do email, send me a message on one of the various social media services where I’ve posted this. (My preference continues to be Mastodon, but I do go on others from time to time.)
Until the next time,
Dan
